Ama and Its effect on the Body

Since Ama and Agni tie hand in hand together, reading both post (Link to Agni Here) would be beneficial to understand deeper how they connect to one another but if you have not read the post about Agni, here is a summary:

Agni works within our body in hand with our digestive system to rid toxins and break down food into energy in our body. Agni keeps ama in check by detoxing the body and keeping it in optimal health, preventing buildup if your agni is strong and burning bright.


To dive a little deeper into Ama, this is what we want the less amount of possible. Ama can come from so many different things we do not even realize before we consume it into our bodies and somethings naturally are consumed without us actively contributing. We never actually know what is in the food we buy from fast food, the products we get off the shelf or the toxins we experience from other factors in life. In the world we live, ama is everywhere and eventually, everyone will deal with a buildup that has a negative affect on their body wondering where in the world did this pain or ache come from.

Ama in the built-up form can cause real issues that are bad for our cells inwardly and our health outwardly. It can present itself as physical and even mental signs that some people that dealt with for years without knowing.


A few cues of ama build up physically can be:

  • Sinus/lymph congestion or constipation

  • Fatigue

  • Heaviness

  • Heart burn or diarrhea

  • Indigestion

  • Abnormal taste, muted taste, or poor appetite

  • Mental confusion

  • Feeling unclean

A few mental cues can be:

  • Lack of energy and enthusiasm

  • Low self esteem

  • Anxiety

  • Worry

  • Depression

  • Fear of the unknown

  • A foggy mind

  • Unclear thinking

Eliminating Ama can be things such as:

  • Yoga to stretch the tissues or meditation to calm the mind

  • Minimizing heavy foods, drinking warm water before meals, or using digestive herbs to help Agni

  • Sweating and increasing your heart rate can flush out your cell channels and loosen up the ama to be detoxed out of your body.


Simple changes to remove it and continued regular detoxing of ama can allow for better optimal health both physically and mentally. All of these symptoms can simply stem from a buildup and make these pains and aches lessen once simply practiced with no major procedure or lots of doctor appointments. All can be done from the comfort of your home and the choices you make to better your holistic health. Perfection is not the goal, start adding in 1-2 things into your life and see the change in how you feel. You deserve answers to why you feel the way you do and to address the root cause to finally put an end on treating the symptoms.
